Still Lots to do Before We Travel....

Flights and hotel are done - we are flying Eva Air the night before Thanksgiving on a night-time flight and will arrive into Taipei on November 27th very early in the morning. We are all getting our vaccines on Friday and we have a Skype meeting set up with Billi on November 11th!!!!! We are so excited to see her live and not in just a picture here and there!!! I am hoping to set up another Skype before we leave or may ask the orphanage if we can meet with her for a playdate a day in advance as I am really worried about her acclimating to us. Trying to find a housesitter / dogsitter and just basically running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I really would like Billi to retain her native language, so I spoke to a woman who lives in my area that is from Taiwan!!! She is going to come and help my husband and I learn some Mandarin before we go and I am also working out a schedule for her to come and hang out with Billi a couple of times a week and speak to her in Mandarin after she is home  for a while - not sure of logistics yet, but would love it if it works out. My friend also created a Mandarin series for kids to learn Mandarin that you can see on the link in upper right hand corner - I can't tell you how cool this is, what a great tool for us to have - my son loves it!! I am getting things buttoned up at work as well, so that things will run smoothly while I am gone. I plan on working a very minimal amount of time when I am ready to go back and just take things one day at a time.

  1. Hi Dixi. Congrats again...I am on the Chung Yi Parents YAHOO group with you. I think it's great that you guys are trying to learn some Mandarin and that you have someone lined up to come and speak to Billi in Mandarin, too. Just a word of caution that you may not ever need, but our girls were VERY leary of anyone speaking Mandarin to them when they first came home, and I know another family where the little girl just broke down in uncontrollable sobs when a woman spoke to her in Mandarin. Maybe they think these women are going to take them, or something? Anyway, your daughter is 4 and might better understand (ours are 2 and 3) but in case it doesn't work out as planned, I wanted you to know that fear of Mandarin speakers isn't unusual. And hopefully all will go well.

I'm so excited to follow your journey. The next few weeks will go by so fast!

    Cheers,
    Heather

  2. Billi is so adorable. I'm so happy that you will finally get to pick her up. I know you have lots of planning to do, but you may want to take copies of your income taxes. I just happen to make copies and Mr. Fu at AIT asked for them, so I'm glad I had them or our VISA might have been held up. I'm looking forward to following your adventure in Taiwan.
    Take care, Michelle (Lexie's mom)

  3. Hey Dixi,

Can't wait for you to experience wonderful Taiwan. Be sure to bring your tax papers just in case. AIT asked me for them. I think since Billi is older they may have a day for you to meet her and spend some time with her before the actual "gotcha" day.

We had videotaped Lexie's nanny singing and thought it would be make her feel better, but after she saw the video, she cried for a long time. I think the memories were too fresh. You may want to give Billi some time to adjust before working on Mandarin lessons.

I can't wait to follow your journey there.

    Take care,
    michelle

  4. Hi Dixi, I've been trying to write a comment in Taiwan, but it hasn't worked, so I'll try it now that I'm home. I'm looking forward to following you on your journey to Taiwan. I know you must be going crazy getting things together. You may want to bring a copy of your tax papers. I was asked for them at AIT.

We had taped a video of Lexie's nanny singing to her in Mandarin. We thought it would soothe her, but instead it had the opposite effect. She cried uncontrollably for a long time. I would let your daughter get adjusted to being with your family before you begin Mandarin lessons. I think teaching them Mandarin is a great idea, but she may need some time.

Take care and let me know if you have any questions before you go.

    :)michelle
